Parents and Carers:
Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other carers who read with their family member for just ten minutes each day, play an important role in the development of a positive attitude toward reading and the subsequent development of literacy skills.
Talking with a young reader about a book empowers learning. Together, the significant adult and young reader explore vocabulary, plot development, character traits and new understandings of the text being read.
In the print-out for carers are some question prompts that will stimulate a discussion about each chapter. Remember to ask your young reader: Where do we find the answer in the text? There is also a word search for the young readers to complete independently or with their adult ‘reading buddy’ and ideas for visual thinking – drawing painting or making.
